History of Football

Football is a very popular sport today. But it all started somewhere. The inventor of football was Walter Camp. In 1879 he instituted the rules from rugby and turned it into an American sport, known as football.

Walter Camp contributed these changes from Rugby and Soccer to American football:

    * One side retained undisputed possession of the ball, until that side gives up the ball as a result of its own violations
    * The line of scrimmage
    * 11 on a team instead of 15
    * created the quarter-back and center positions
    * Forward pass
    * standardized the scoring system, numerical scoring
    * created the safety, interference, penalties, and the neutral zone
    * tackling as low as the knee was permitted - 1888
    * A touchdown increased in value to six points and field goals went down to three points - 1912

Rutgers University and Princeton University were the first college teams to play a game of American football. In 1920 the American professional football association was founded and Jim Thorpe was its first president. The original teams of the NFL were:

    * Akron Pros
    * Buffalo All-Americans
    * Canton Bulldogs
    * Chicago Tigers
    * Cleveland Indians
    * Columbus Panhandles
    * Dayton Triangles
    * Decatur Staleys
    * Detroit Heralds
    * Hammond Pros
    * Muncie Flyers
    * Racine Cardinals
    * Rochester Jeffersons
    * Rock Island Independents
